One of the biggest problems with living in the country is not having the best drinking water. Most rural homes rely on ground water or well water for their drinking, washing, and cooking water; us included. It didn’t take me long after moving here to realize that well water was NOT going to work for this city-bred woman. Almost immediately I began purchasing bottled water to supplement our drinking water but that got expensive quickly.
Remembering back to my childhood when my parents used to trek dozens of empty milk jugs to a spring water vending company and fill the jugs, I realized that we could do the same too. When I was a little girl we also lived in a rural area and at that time we had a cistern water tank and the water was horrible. I started saving jugs from the water I had bought and recruiting jugs from my mother in law and my father and started buying our own drinking water from spring water vending sites. I also took my dad up on his offer (or maybe I just said I was going to stop in and get water,I don’t remember) and filled up at his house whenever I visited. My mother in law has also been a big help with making sure we have good drinking water; nearly every time she visits, she will take a crate of empty water jugs with her and the next time she visits we have water jugs with good drinking water!
Even with all of the measures I take to make sure we have good, clean water, my youngest, Peanut, is not a fan of plain water. (He pretty much hates it unless it comes from a fountain – go figure!) And while it’s not been horribly hot here in Ohio, we are known to get pretty smuggly (a cross between sweltering and muggy) in August and I’m always concerned that I won’t be able to keep Peanut hydrated enough.
This is where a great opportunity comes in! I was offered the chance to try out Clear American Sparkling Flavored Water through a shopper insight with Collective Bias. It’s been a while (probably a year!!) since I’ve found a shopper insight that works with my family and so I was thrilled to participate. Because I’m a know it all kind of girl, before I could officially say yes I had to check out the Clear American Twitter page, Facebook and webpage (Which shows you all of the great flavors they have to offer!)
We headed out to Walmart to see what was in store for us! I had no idea all the different types of flavored water available. My mother in-law is a fan of flavored water and will sometimes treat the kids to it at her house, but I have never had flavored water (a purist at heart with maybe a splash of lemon at best!!).
We picked just about every kind of Clear American Flavored Water that Walmart had to offer. I wasn’t sure how it would be received at home or what the kids would like so buying a wide variety of water seemed like the best idea to me.
The kids didn’t even wait for the water to get cold! Immediately they broke into the water and had nearly all of it drank by the end of the day. It took only three days for us to be completely out of the Clear American Water that I purchased at Walmart (we bought three 4-packs of water and six one liters).
My oldest, who is in marching band thought that the Clear American Water would be a good option for him to take to Band Camp. The marching band spends three hours a day for three weeks before school starts practicing drills, learning music and getting the incoming freshman acclimated to marching band life. These kids work hard and every day when I pick Bug up from camp, the kids are all hot, sweaty and tired. What a great idea to be able to pay forward all the great entertainment the kids give us through the year with a cool and healthy drink!
I packed up what we had left and headed to the high school where some thirsty kids were thrilled to see me! They eagerly took advantage of a free refreshment; what teenager wouldn’t!? And you know how picky teenagers can be sometimes right? Well, I’m pleased that they all loved the Clear American water too and seemed surprised by the great price (teenagers are consumers too ya know!) and selection that we had with us.
As much as I loved the Clear American Sparkling Water and found it a very reasonable price, I don’t see this being something I’ll add to the weekly grocery list because it is still cheaper for me to buy gallons of water or visit my dad (for free) and get quality drinking water there. However I do see it becoming a favorite treat for my kids and a great supplement to sport drinks or Kool Aid for their soccer, football and band activities and my youngest loved it. For him alone I see this being a great incentive to drinking more water!
